Permitting timelines puts America on a competitive disadvantage

Katie Sweeney, general counsel to the National Mining Association, discussed in an interview on Tuesday the need for a more efficient permitting timeline for mining projects, noting that the “‘amount of time it takes to permit a facility has been a real deterrent to investment’ in the United States.”

Comparing the United States’ permitting process—which takes between five and 10 years—to countries such as Australia, Canada or Chile—where a permits can be attained in 18 months to three years—Sweeney notes that the our nation’s permitting process puts us at a competitive disadvantage.
